Wei-Li Hong

Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant Fellow 2022

Project summary

The seabed provides new insights into climate change

Wei-Li Hong’s research project, “Silicate alteration in marine sediments: rate, pathway, and significance”, addresses questions of major relevance to climate change. His research focuses on marine sediments in the world’s oceans.

“The Earth’s oceans are vast, yet we still know very little about what lies beneath the seabed. My research could help change our understanding of how carbon dioxide is sequestered on Earth. A great deal of research has been conducted on silicate weathering on land, but marine silicate alteration has not traditionally been considered important to our overall understanding of the Earth system. For example, we previously thought that carbon dioxide was the main factor, but silicates have now been shown to be equally important,” explains Dr Wei-Li Hong, Assistant Professor in Geochemistry at the Department of Geological Sciences at Stockholm University.

Wei-Li Hong was awarded funding through the 2022 Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant (SFSG) call. The following year, he was awarded a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
