Exploring the depths of 3D reconstruction through mathematics
Today, rolling-shutter (RS) cameras dominate the market thanks to their affordability, improved resolution and higher frame rates. They also play an important role in technologies such as assisted driving, capturing images by exposing the sensor row by row over time rather than capturing the entire image at once.
Traditional reconstruction methods, however, struggle when the camera is moving, particularly when it is mounted on fast-moving platforms such as cars – an increasingly common application.
Kathlén’s project explores the complex world of 3D reconstruction from images captured by rolling-shutter cameras. Drawing on algebraic geometry, she is developing a mathematical foundation specifically tailored to these cameras. Her work paves the way for faster reconstruction algorithms that can achieve greater accuracy than methods based on machine learning.
