Linnea Wegerstad

Project call in law 2023.

Project summary

Studying how judges decide on sentences

In the project Understanding sentencing – proportionality, conformity and sources of law in judicial decision-making, Linnea will examine how judges in Swedish courts determine the appropriate sentence for a convicted person. In doing so, she aims to increase our understanding of the factors taken into account, the sources of knowledge and legal authority used by judges, and the process through which they reach their decisions.

As part of the research project, Linnea will attend court hearings, conduct detailed analyses of written judgments and interview judges. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of how criminal offences are assessed in Swedish courts. Such knowledge will be valuable to practising lawyers as well as students and researchers in legal scholarship.

Linnea is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law at Lund University.
