CreAI: Co-existing with creative Artificial Intelligence within the limits of EU law. Data protection, intellectual property, freedom of expression and cybercrime.
Katja de Vries, PhD in Law, studies our coexistence with artificial intelligence (AI). Over the past decade, rapid advances in digital technology have led to AI being used to improve image and speech recognition on smartphones, help doctors identify different forms of cancer, and deliver targeted advertising on social media.
While classification-based AI can sort or distinguish between data – for example, telling a Picasso from a Matisse – de Vries illustrates how new forms of generative AI can be used to create entirely new data, such as a convincing imitation of an artist’s work.
Within the framework of EU law, de Vries examines the implications of these technologies across areas ranging from cybercrime and intellectual property law to data protection and freedom of expression.
